Soft skills: "Resilience is the art of navigating torrents." - Boris Cyrulnik

 

The first time I heard about resilience was in 2007.
I was HR manager and had to manage a major reorganization: redundancies, profound changes in working methods... A shock for many employees.

Management then asked me to help the teams become more resilient.
Except... I didn't even know what the word meant.

I discovered that, in physics, resilience refers to a metal's ability to return to its original shape after an impact.

In psychology, it's the ability to bounce back after an ordeal.
It's what keeps us going despite difficulties, failures and losses.

 

Why is resilience essential?

First of all, we live in an uncertain, ever-changing world.
A redundancy, an economic crisis, floods...
A career change, a bold project, an unforeseen opportunity...

In all these cases, our ability to adapt makes all the difference.

Secondly, according to the World Health Organization, 1 in 2 people will experience a major trauma in their lifetime.
And yet, we're not all equal when it comes to hardship.
Some collapse and stay stuck.
Others find the strength to bounce back, sometimes even stronger than before.

Why? Because resilience isn't innate. Because resilience isn't innate.

In fact, it depends on 3 main factors.

3 pillars to build resilience :

1. State of mind: how you perceive failure

The same event can be experienced in a thousand different ways.
A failure can be seen as a fatality... or as an opportunity for growth.
Exercise: Replace "Why is this happening to me?" with "What can I learn from this situation?"

2. Problem-solving skills

Bouncing back isn't just about "taking it in", it's also about finding solutions.

Practice problem-solving: identify the obstacle, list options, test solutions.
The more you practice overcoming everyday challenges, the better equipped you'll be for bigger ones.

3-Surroundings and social support

Boris Cyrulnik proved it: human relationships are a key factor in resilience.
🔹 Surround ourselves with caring, supportive people.
🔹 Avoid those who amplify negativity or minimize our difficulties.
🔹 Learn to ask for help.

 

Resilience, a key skill for today and tomorrow

We live in a "VUCA" world:

    • Volatile: everything changes quickly.
    • Uncertain: impossible to predict everything.
    • Complex: the challenges are many.
    • Ambiguous: traditional reference points are shifting.

In this context, resilience is not a luxury. It's a necessity.
And the good news is that it can be cultivated!
